Please join me for this talk on how to communicate in a way that encourages listening and understanding, even in a difficult moment. Mindful communication can solve many problems in both our personal lives and the world at large. It unites and repairs, while unskillful communication usually just makes problems worse. In demonstrating more equanimity in our own communication, we naturally show those around us how to do so as well. Come learn to be a more grounding, truthful, de-escalating force for yourself, your community, and beyond.

Please join me for this talk about presence. About the value and satisfaction of prioritizing beingness in ourselves and others over the trivial doing — in the simple moments, in our daily lives, in subtle ways. This is a talk to help you shift from quantity to quality. From transactional exchanges to kind encounters. From a sense of self defined not by your resume, but by your character. This shift can resolve feelings of isolation, anxiety, and insatiability. It fosters self-love, strengthens community, and brings happiness to the present moment. 

Please bring a journal or notebook with you. Dress comfortably, as we will spend most of our time seated on the floor. (Chairs are easily provided for those who need them.)

Yoga for Scoliosis

THIS WORKSHOP IS DESIGNED FOR PRACTITIONERS WITH SCOLIOSIS, AS WELL AS TEACHERS INTERESTED IN HELPING STUDENTS WITH SCOLIOSIS.

Due to structural imbalance, scoliosis often brings with it muscle tension, fatigue, numbness, nervous system strain, back pain, and depression. Awareness of one's own motion, weight, and position in space (proprioception) is also compromised with scoliosis, because information from the joints and muscles is unbalanced, and the head is not quite centered over the body.

In this workshop, we'll discuss:
- the physiological and emotional difficulties that result from scoliosis
- techniques for creating greater symmetry and proprioception when practising with scoliosis
- how to modify common postures to better serve the body in the case of scoliosis
- postures and modifications that can ease the daily strain of scoliosis
- how, as a teacher, to recognize scoliosis in your students

While yoga cannot cure scoliosis, it can help slow or stop its progression, especially in the case of functional scoliosis. A regular yoga practice with intelligent modifications can also significantly alleviate the pain and fatigue of scoliosis. A practitioner with scoliosis must work with intelligence over ambition. Working intelligently with your total conditions is the healthy application of the yoga practice in any situation.

Mindfulness Talk: Staying Present In Difficult Moments

To create a more peaceful world, we must each look at our own words and actions that contribute to suffering. This involves staying present with feelings that make us uneasy. This workshop applies Buddhist wisdom to the common problems of ingrained reactions. 

When we are upset (justified or not), we often lash out because on some level we believe we’ll feel better. But really, we don’t. Our own bodies become filled with the negative feeling, and a dis-ease is spread, not transferred. When we learn to slow down and face what we are feeling instead of reacting, we become free. We become free of our fears and we become active participants in creating a nonviolent future.

In our time together, I’ll share practical techniques to help you respond to difficult situations from a place of vision rather than fear or pain. I’ll share stories and insights that will help you transform future moments of difficulty into wisdom and compassion. We'll begin with a guided metta meditation practice, followed by storytelling, discussion, and some Q&A. On this topic, I draw inspiration from teachers of stillness including Pema Chodrin, Thich Nhat Hanh, and Terry Tempest Williams. Please consider inviting your friends, 
family, co-workers, and fellow activists for change.
