Course Outline

Week 1: The EXPERIENCE OF AN OPEN HEART

In this class, we’ll discuss what it’s like to live with a more open heart, and how to get there. Topics will include an overview of the metta bhavana practice, the willingness to feel, and the common barriers we put up against a more open, loving heart.

Week 2: GETTING TO COMPASSION

In this class, we’ll discuss the suffering that underlies all wrong-thought and wrong-doing, and learn to find our way out of judgement and into compassion.

Week 3: FORGIVENESS

In this class, we’ll discuss forgiveness and how to find your own way through it. We’ll also begin our discussion of the uniquely Western expressions of suffering that arise in our highly-individualized cultural system — expressions of suffering that aren’t typically addressed in the context of the Buddhist teachings on loving-kindness.

Week 4: SELF-LOVE & BELONGING

In this class, we’ll discuss the importance of self-love and how to reclaim it. We’ll also discuss the importance of belonging and of generosity in the equation of self-fulfillment.

How It Works

Just before our start date, you’ll be invited into an exclusive group on Mighty Networks with your fellow loving-kindness classmates. Mighty Networks allows for more intentional community building and sharing, and will not draw you into the meanderings of Facebook.

On Sunday, July 28th, August 4th, 11th, and 18th, you’ll receive a series of lessons, with some homework to do throughout the week.

On Saturday, August 3rd, 10th, 17th, 24th, we’ll meet at 9:30am PST for a live 90 minute conference call to discuss the topics of the week. These calls are recorded so you’ll have access to them any time if you miss one or all of them.

In the conference calls, you’ll have an opportunity to ask questions and share your stories, insights, and challenges about the topic of the week.

Our private community on Mighty Networks can be used throughout the course to engage with your classmates. It’s my hope to create a very real community, even in our virtual setting.
