Why I Wake Early

Once upon a time, four billion years ago, the first self-replicating molecule came into existence. This unlikely event created the bedrock for all of life as we know it. This event is so rare, and so completely against the odds. And it’s the miracle that underlies anything and anyone you love.

Go now and look at the sun, or any living thing, and consider all that had to happen for it to exist at all. Every single day is a miracle. Your life is a complete miracle. If we remember this, if we truly understand this, we can walk through the world with amazement, and the bickering and the petty things will fall away.

Here is a current favorite of mine,
"Why I Wake Early", by Mary Oliver:

Hello, sun in my face.
Hello, you who make the morning
and spread it over the fields
and into the faces of the tulips
and the nodding morning glories,
and into the windows of, even,
the miserable and the crochety -

best preacher that ever was,
dear star, that just happens to be where you are
in the universe to keep us from ever-darkness,
to ease us with warm touching,
to hold us in the great hands of the light -
good morning good morning good morning.

Watch, now, how I start the day
in happiness, in kindness.
