Natural Remedies for Sore Throat, Fever, & Congestion

These are natural remedies for the cold and flu season. Simple as they are, they work very well. Take good care of yourself.

FOR CONGESTION
Mix 1/4 teaspoon black pepper powder with 1 teaspoon raw honey. Take this after meals.

FOR A FEVER
A fever means your body is fighting an infection. Vitamin C with bioflavonoids together helps the body fight infection. In addition, the concoction that always heals me rapidly and reduces a fever is a strong tea made of fresh basil, ginger and lemon. Grate the ginger, make a tea with it and include lots of it, as if you were making sangria. Chop the lemon, include lots of it too, and also add lots of basil. Drink this up and also eat it with a spoon. Have this as much as possible throughout the day. You will feel better so quickly. Alternately, you can make a light tea with fresh sage leaves, some lemon and some raw honey. Sage is anti-bacterial and can help the body get rid of the bug. 

FOR A SORE THROAT
For a sore throat, blend together 1 teaspoon whole cloves, 1/2 teaspoon celery seeds, 1/2 teaspoon tumeric, 1/4 teaspoon ginger powder, 1 teaspoon ghee, and 1/2 teaspoon honey. Take 1/2 teaspoon multiple times throughout the day. Alternatively, chew one whole clove followed by the black inner seeds of 1 cardamom pod (spit out the remainder of each when finished). 

TEAS
Sage tea can help fight throat infections and help bring down fevers. A tea of Peppermint, lemon, and raw honey is soothing and cooling to a fatigued system and supports the healing process. You'll want freshly made loose-leaf teas for effectiveness. Teas that have been overly exposed to air (such as store-bought teas in tea bags) will not be nearly as effective. Two good sources: Mountain Rose Herbs and Jean's Greens.

GENERAL DIET
Do not eat any animal products (meat or dairy) while you are sick, especially if congested, as they are too taxing for the weak system to process. Stick with cooked vegetables and broths. Also avoid carbohydrates and do not eat any cane sugar. Both of those things will literally feed the bug you are attempting to fight.

STILLNESS
You must rest a lot and drink water. These two things may be more helpful than anything. As often as possible, lie in viparita karani (legs up the wall pose). Elevate the pelvis a little bit with a bolster or pillow. Wrap a very soft scarf around your neck and place a blanket over the body. This will help guide the body towards quietness and stillness, which leads to healing.
